Where We Hike

Mount Kenya is our home mountain and the heart of what we do. We also guide on a handful of other Kenyan hikes that are worth the journey. Every trip below runs with our own guides, cooks and porters.

Mount Kenya — Point Lenana

At 4,985 m, Point Lenana is the highest point on Mount Kenya reachable on foot. No ropes, no technical climbing — just a well-paced trek through five distinct ecological zones, from rainforest to glacier-carved rock. It is the trek most of our clients come for.

Three routes lead up, and the one you choose shapes the whole experience.

Sirimon Route

The driest approach and the gentlest acclimatisation profile, which makes it our recommendation for first-timers and anyone concerned about altitude.

From Sirimon Gate it is 9 km of montane forest and giant bamboo to Old Moses camp — around two hours, longer if you stop for photographs, and you will want to. From Old Moses to Shipton’s Camp is a further 17 km through the richest vegetation on the mountain, a full day’s walk that brings you to the base of the peaks.

4–6 days.

Chogoria Route

The most beautiful way up the mountain, and not a close contest. The Chogoria approach passes Lake Ellis, the Gorges Valley and Lake Michaelson, with Minto’s Hut sitting in an amphitheatre of cliffs below the summit.

5–6 days.

Naro Moru Route

The fastest and steepest line to Point Lenana, including the notorious Vertical Bog. Quick, but the rapid altitude gain makes altitude sickness more likely, so we recommend it only for hikers with prior high-altitude experience.

4–5 days.

Chogoria–Sirimon Traverse

Our most popular itinerary. You ascend the scenic Chogoria route and descend Sirimon, crossing the mountain rather than retracing your steps. Two completely different faces of Mount Kenya in one trip, and no repeated ground.

5–6 days. See our routes guide for day-by-day detail.

Batian and Nelion — The True Summits

Mount Kenya’s actual peaks — Batian at 5,199 m and Nelion at 5,188 m — are technical rock climbs, not treks. They demand ropes, alpine experience and a qualified climbing guide, and they are in a different league of commitment from Point Lenana.

We arrange these climbs for experienced mountaineers. Our guide to the true summit and its dangers sets out honestly what is involved.

Day Hikes and Short Walks

Not everyone wants to summit, and you do not need to in order to see the best of this mountain.

One-day Sirimon hike. A single day from Sirimon Gate through montane forest, bamboo and into the moorland — enough to see giant lobelia, giant groundsel and tree heather, the plants Mount Kenya is famous for. Ideal if you are based in Nanyuki or passing through.

Family forest walks. A relaxed two to three hours through the forest and giant bamboo zone at a children’s pace, returning to your vehicle. No altitude, no long distances, and plenty of birdlife and monkeys.

Both run year-round and can be arranged at short notice.

Mount Ololokwe

A striking flat-topped massif rising out of the Samburu plains north of Isiolo, sacred to the Samburu people. The climb is steep but short, and the summit view over the northern rangelands is one of the finest in Kenya.

Often combined with a Mount Kenya trek as a contrasting second leg.

2–3 days.

The Aberdare Range

Mount Kenya’s quieter neighbour across the Rift — moorland, waterfalls and dense forest, with hikes that suit a long weekend rather than a full expedition. A good choice if you want high-altitude walking without committing to a summit push.

Our Mount Kenya vs Aberdares comparison explains which suits which kind of hiker.
