Chogoria climbs Mount Kenya from the east and is widely held to be the most beautiful route on the mountain: the Nithi Falls, Lake Ellis, the Gorges Valley, Lake Michaelson beneath The Temple, and Minto’s Hut set in an amphitheatre of cliffs below the peaks. Three itineraries begin here — an out-and-back to Point Lenana, or a traverse descending the Sirimon or Naro Moru side. Pick the one that fits your days and your pace.

The Chogoria route approaches Mount Kenya from the east, from Chogoria town near Meru. It is widely regarded as the most scenic way up the mountain and is far quieter than Sirimon or Naro Moru, but the long, rough road up to the park gate means it needs a little more time and planning.
Above the forest the trail follows the rim of the Gorges Valley, passing Lake Ellis and looking down on Lake Michaelson, before reaching the Hall Tarns and Minto’s Camp (about 4,300 m). From there the summit push to Point Lenana (4,985 m) starts before dawn to catch sunrise from the top.
Many trekkers use the Chogoria route on the way up for its scenery and descend by the Sirimon route; an out-and-back trip is quieter still. The itineraries above cover each option. Compare them with the Naro Moru route, or tell us your dates and we will recommend one.
